Lighting Design and Fixture Selection

The key to successful lighting design is to first decide what is to be lit, and then work backwards to determine the solution.  Considerations include:

  • function of the space – what tasks need to be supported
  • desired emotional effect – dramatic (highlight architecture or art) versus stimulating (promote energy and excitement) versus calming (promote relaxation, comfort and focus)
  • desired impression of spaciousness – does the space need to seem larger?  Or more intimate?
  • integration of multiple lighting layers, as appropriate
  • existing or planned surface finishes
  • existing or planned daylighting
  • ecological impact
  • other special considerations
